Frequently asked questions

Can a standard strap be fitted to the Patek Philippe Nautilus 7118/1452G-001?

No. The bracelet is integrated into the white gold case: there is no standard lug to attach an off-the-shelf strap. The fitting is proprietary, designed by Patek Philippe to merge seamlessly with the case. If you want to wear this watch on leather, the only option is a bespoke strap made directly on the watch itself.

How does the bespoke strap service work for this model?

I make the strap at Casati Milano, by appointment only, at Via XX Settembre 15 in Milan. I bring the watch to the bench, take measurements from the actual case — not from technical datasheets — and shape the fittings by hand until the join is invisible. I won't send out a strap without having seen the watch in person.

Which leather do I recommend for the Nautilus in white gold?

On a white gold Nautilus, with its hybrid character between sporty and formal, I prefer grey pearl Mississippi alligator with a matte finish. The grey holds its own against the white gold without overpowering it, and the matte finish balances the metal's shine. It's a combination I've seen work very well on the wrist — not just in theory.

How long does a well-made strap last on a watch of this calibre?

A strap made from selected leather and built properly lasts on average five to eight years of regular wear, sometimes longer. The key is care: let it dry if it gets wet, avoid bending it the wrong way, keep it away from perfumes and creams. Alligator and Barenia age well — they develop a patina that tells the story of time spent on the wrist, rather than hiding it.

The Nautilus was born as a sports watch — does wearing it on leather make sense?

Gérald Genta drew it in 1976 with something in mind that could work equally on a boat or at dinner. That dual nature is in the Nautilus's DNA. The 7118/1452G version in white gold has already taken a clear step towards elegance — on leather, that direction is simply completed. It doesn't betray the watch at all. It takes it where it was already headed.
