The Aquanaut 5968G-010, seen from the bench

The Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5968G-010 is a contemporary evolution of sporting elegance, launched in 1997 as a modern response to the legendary Nautilus. This white gold reference features a 42.2mm sculptured case with the characteristic embossed grenade motif, representing the synthesis of technical robustness and Geneva watchmaking refinement. The Aquanaut exemplifies luxury sports watch design for discerning collectors.

Frequently asked questions

Can a standard strap be fitted to the Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5968G-010?

No. The bracelet is integrated into the case with a proprietary attachment: no standard strap will fit. This is a deliberate construction choice by Patek Philippe, not a limitation. In the atelier I build the strap directly on the watch, made to measure.

How does the bespoke strap service work for this model?

I work on this type of case exclusively at Casati Milano, by appointment, at Via XX Settembre 15 in Milan. I bring the watch to the bench, take measurements directly from the case, and build every connection by hand. There are no pre-made templates: each strap is created from scratch on that specific piece.

Which leather do I recommend for the Aquanaut 5968G-010?

For a sport-elegant watch in white gold, I prefer a glossy alligator in tone-on-tone shades — deep black or dark anthracite grey. It keeps the Aquanaut's contemporary character without overpowering it. I have seen textured leather combinations that work well too, but on white gold the gloss wins.

How long does a well-made artisan strap last?

With normal care I expect at least five to seven years of regular wear. Quality leather does not deteriorate: it ages, develops character, and moulds to the wrist. I recommend keeping it away from prolonged water exposure and letting it breathe between uses.

Was the Aquanaut really created as an answer to the Nautilus?

Yes. Patek Philippe launched the Aquanaut in 1997 to give the house a second sport reference with its own identity. The faceted octagonal case and the grenade pattern on the dial make it instantly recognisable. I have watched its standing among collectors grow steadily year after year: today it holds its own against any sport reference on the market.
