Frequently asked questions

What is the lug width of the Nomos Glashütte Tetra 486?

The Nomos Glashütte Tetra 486 features a 18mm lug width, a rare and specific dimension resulting from the 29.50mm square case and its movement proportions. This width ensures the strap integrates seamlessly without lateral overhang, preserving the geometric harmony of the design.

Which strap do you recommend for the Tetra 486?

The ideal strap depends on intended use. For formal elegance, we recommend alligator grain or shell cordovan in dark tones (aged mahogany, black): the leather texture echoes the square case geometry. For robust daily wear, NATO in canvas or technical silk offers practicality. Dark blue or black rubber adds sportiness whilst maintaining minimalism. All available with specific 18mm lugs.

How do you change the strap on a watch with 18mm lugs?

Obtain a spring bar tool. Position the watch caseback up. Insert the flat blade into the small slot at the base of the lug pin, push laterally with care to compress the internal spring, then remove the old strap. Align the new 18mm strap with the pin holes, insert the pin whilst compressing the spring again until it clicks into place.

Is an aftermarket strap compatible with the Tetra 486?

Yes, provided the lug width is exactly 18mm. Any strap in leather, canvas, or rubber with 18mm lugs is mechanically compatible. We recommend verifying buckle quality (satin stainless finishes, not polished) and leather craftsmanship, as these influence overall aesthetic harmony with the watch.

How long does a leather strap last on the Tetra 486?

A quality leather strap (alligatore, shell cordovan, calf) typically lasts 3-5 years with daily wear, depending on climate, perspiration, and maintenance. Vegetable-tanned leather develops natural patina, accelerating aesthetic ageing (desirable). Protect from prolonged moisture and dirt. Quality NATO canvas requires replacement every 4-6 years; rubber every 2-3 years.
