The lug width of the IWC Pilot IW3270-07 is precisely 20 mm. This measurement is critical when purchasing an aftermarket strap: it is measured horizontally between the two inner points of the case lugs, excluding the side bars. The lug depth is 5.2 mm, an important dimension for rigid leathers such as shell cordovan.

For the IWC Pilot IW3270-07, alligator in cognac or black is recommended for historical continuity, or European calf in vegetable tanning for contemporary versatility. Alligator maintains the link with 1950s aviation watchmaking, while calf offers natural patina and progressive softening over time. Both require a stainless steel deployante to match the case finish.

Changing the strap on an IWC Pilot IW3270-07 requires a spring bar removal tool. Position the watch on a soft cloth, insert the tool tip into the small lateral slot of the lug bar, gently compress the spring until the lug is freed, then remove the strap. Repeat on the opposite side. Insert the new strap by sliding the spring into the case lug holes, ensuring the spring is correctly positioned.

All straps with a 20 mm lug width are compatible with the IWC Pilot IW3270-07, provided the cross-section does not exceed 4.0 mm. It is preferable to opt for handcrafted straps with a thickness of 3.5–3.8 mm to ensure a precise fit in the case's attachment points. Recommended materials: alligator, calf in vegetable tanning, shell cordovan, silk satin NATO, FKM rubber for water use.

The lifespan of a leather strap depends on the material and usage patterns. Vegetable-tanned alligator lasts 5–8 years with moderate daily wear, developing a deep patina. European calf has a similar lifespan of 5–7 years, progressively softening. Shell cordovan offers superior longevity, 8–12 years, thanks to fibre density. Wear is primarily caused by lug flexion and humidity exposure. Regular maintenance with purpose-made balms extends the strap's life.
