The Big Pilot IW5010-12 (aka: IW501012), seen from the bench

The IWC Big Pilot's Watch Right-Hander IW5010-12 is a modern evolution of a 1940s pilot's watch. It features a 46.2 mm brushed stainless steel case with a manual-wind IWC caliber 52010 movement, offering a 7-day power reserve visible through the caseback. The watch has a black dial, white gold applied indices, sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment, and an oversized crown at 12 o'clock for gloved operation. Standard lug width is 22 mm.

Frequently asked questions

What is the lug width of the IWC Big Pilot IW5010-12?

The IWC Big Pilot IW5010-12 features a standard lug width of 22 millimetres. This dimension is rigorously standardised by IWC to ensure compatibility with certified aftermarket straps whilst maintaining the correct ergonomic proportions between the 46.2mm case and the strap itself.

Which strap is most recommended for the IWC Big Pilot IW5010-12?

For the IW5010-12, we recommend an alligator strap with vegetable tanning or shell cordovan: both materials enhance the vintage vocation of the timepiece and develop natural patina that complements the steel case's ageing. Alligator offers classical elegance, whilst cordovan guarantees superior durability. For a more sporting profile, a NATO strap in cotton represents an authentic alternative to the model's aviation heritage.

How do you correctly change the strap on the IW5010-12?

Strap replacement requires the use of a specific spring bar tool. Position the watch on a stable surface, locate the two lugs positioned orthogonally to the case, gently insert the tool to compress the lug's internal spring and slide the strap out. The reverse procedure permits installation of the new strap. We recommend operating with care to avoid scratching the case.

Is an aftermarket strap compatible with the IWC Big Pilot IW5010-12?

Yes, any strap with certified 22mm lug width is mechanically compatible with the IW5010-12. However, we recommend verifying the construction quality and materials employed: an artisanal genuine leather strap offers not only superior aesthetic finish but also significantly greater durability compared to low-grade industrial alternatives.

What is the average lifespan of a leather strap for the Big Pilot IW5010-12?

The lifespan of a leather strap depends on the material and frequency of use. Quality artisanal alligator maintains structural integrity for 4-6 years with ordinary maintenance. Shell cordovan, being a denser equine leather, can reach 8-10 years. Environmental factors such as humidity, sun exposure and perspiration accelerate ageing. Annual visual inspection and periodic cleaning with mild soap significantly extend the strap's useful life.
