Strap for Big Pilot Le Petit Prince / Stainless Steel

The lug width of the IWC Big Pilot IW5009-08 is 22mm. This measurement is the internal distance between the two lugs (anse) that attach the strap to the case. To verify compatibility with an aftermarket strap, use a calliper or ruler to measure the space between the attachments: it must be exactly 22mm.

For the Big Pilot we recommend an alligator strap in dark brown or black to maximise contrast with the brushed steel case, or a vegetable-tanned leather (cognac or dark brown) that develops natural patina. An alternative for tactical use is an anthracite NATO strap or black silicone for those who wear the watch in sport environments. The choice depends on your use case: formal or everyday.

The strap is changed by removing the spring bar located beneath the lugs of the case. Use a spring bar tool to depress the pin: the strap will be released. Insert the new strap by aligning the holes with the lugs and press the pin back until it clicks. The procedure takes less than a minute and requires no sophisticated tools.

Any strap with a lug width of 22mm is compatible. Specialised brands such as Milano Straps offer artisanal straps in alligator, calf, silicone and canvas, all tested for this size. Ensure the strap is explicitly declared as '22mm'; avoid generalisations such as 'large' or 'standard', which can cause ambiguity.

A quality leather strap (alligator or vegetable-tanned calf) lasts on average 3-5 years with moderate daily use. Durability depends on humidity exposure, sweat, rain and maintenance. A silicone or rubber strap lasts 5-7 years. Leather develops natural creasing over time; this is not deterioration but patina. A new strap costs less than a movement service: it is planned wear and easily reversible.
