The Grand Seiko Spring Drive SBGD201 features a lug width of 20mm. This measurement refers to the internal space between the two lugs of the case, where the strap is fitted. When measured with a calliper, the distance must be precisely 20mm to ensure compatibility with an aftermarket strap.

Given the platinum 950 case and the formal character of the Spring Drive movement, an alligator or shell cordovan strap represents the most coherent choices. Alligator in chocolate or cognac tones accentuates the cool neutrality of platinum, whilst natural-tone shell cordovan imparts elegant lustre. For more dynamic use, vegetable-tanned calf leather offers robustness and natural patina development over time.

The strap is changed using a spring bar tool, a specific instrument that compresses the internal spring of the pin (spring bar) to free the strap from the lugs. Position the flat end of the tool in the spring hole, compress gently, and slide the strap downward. To mount the new strap, reinsert the spring bar into the lug holes, compress it, and slide the strap until the pin settles into the lugs.

The Grand Seiko SBGD201 accepts any strap manufactured for a 20mm lug width. Compatibility is determined solely by lug width, not by specific watch model. You may therefore choose from multiple options: alligator, calf leather, shell cordovan, rubber, textile NATO, and even exotic leather straps, provided they are mounted on a 20mm base with standard spring bars.

The durability of a leather strap depends on the quality of the hide and intensity of wear. Premium alligator or shell cordovan can last 3–5 years of regular wear before replacement, developing a unique patina throughout. Vegetable-tanned calf leather maintains its structure for 2–4 years. Determining factors include humidity, sun exposure, perspiration, and wear frequency. Minimal maintenance (drying after water contact) significantly extends longevity.
