This measurement is standard across the Clifton family and should be measured perpendicularly from the inside of one lug to the inside of the other, excluding any decorative protrusions. Precise measurement is essential to ensure physical compatibility with an aftermarket strap.

Fine-grained alligator leather represents the most coherent choice, given its regular texture that amplifies the Clifton's understated elegance. Alternatively, vegetable-tanned calf leather offers a patina that develops naturally over time, acquiring material character. Both materials respect the watchmaker's original philosophy, unlike bolder options that would create visual discord.

The Clifton 10400 features standard spring-bar lugs. To remove the original strap, use a dedicated tool to compress the spring mechanism from the inside, freeing the lug. Once removed, the new strap is inserted by sliding the attachment into the seat until you hear a click. It is advisable to perform this operation on a soft surface to prevent scratching the case.

A strap marketed as 20mm is physically compatible with the Clifton 10400's lugs. However, stylistic compatibility depends on the material and colour choice: alligator, calf, and structured rubber maintain the design equilibrium, whilst synthetic materials or saturated colours may generate visual discord. Physical compatibility does not automatically imply aesthetic coherence with the original design.

A quality alligator or vegetable-tanned calf strap maintains full functionality for 3-4 years of daily wear, developing natural patina and soft texture that reflects the history of use. Actual lifespan depends on sun exposure, skin moisture and cleaning frequency. A rubber strap guarantees longer longevity (5-6 years) as it resists oxidation and moisture absorption, though gradually losing elasticity.
