This international standard was selected to balance the proportions of the 41.50 mm case, allowing lug bars that are neither slender nor excessively rigid. Accurate measurement is essential: position a digital calliper between the two case flanks (lugs) at the midpoint where the strap sits. The value must correspond to 20.00 ± 0.1 mm.

Selection depends on intended use. For genuine diving and humidity resistance, high-density vulcanised rubber is recommended. For minimalist elegance with strong aquatic performance, vegetable-tanned alligator develops a compelling patina and aesthetic coherent with the diver's Bauhaus severity. Italian calf leather offers superior structural support at the lugs. Nylon NATO guarantees unlimited durability. Shell cordovan is inadvisable, as its burnished finish contradicts the functional philosophy of this instrument.

Remove the original strap using a spring bar tool or small flathead screwdriver. Insert the tool into the small hole beneath the lug, push gently outward until the spring bar pin is released. Repeat on the opposite lug. To install the new strap, align the holes with the bars and press firmly until the strap makes full contact with the case. Ensure both sides are correctly positioned before wearing the watch.

The Archimede Sporttaucher UA8974-TS-A4.2 employs the standard 20 mm lug width, widely available in the artisanal strap market. All 20 mm straps—regardless of brand, material (leather, NATO, rubber, canvas) and thickness—are compatible, provided the strap thickness at the lug passage does not exceed 3.5–4.0 mm. Always verify supplier dimensions before purchase.

An artisanal-quality alligator or calf strap has an average lifespan of 3–5 years with daily non-aquatic use. Regular exposure to moisture and saltwater (characteristic of a diver like the Sporttaucher) significantly reduces longevity: 1–2 years with frequent immersion. Vegetable-tanned straps develop attractive patina but lose flexibility more rapidly. Vulcanised rubber offers the greatest durability, 5–7 years even with constant aquatic exposure. Nylon NATO is virtually unlimited if properly stored.
