Definition
The term covers two distinct realities that intersect in watchmaking history, and I see the confusion between them constantly, even among professionals. On one hand there's the regulator dial — a reading layout. On the other hand there's the mechanical regulator — a fine-tuning device. I treat them separately because they deserve it.
The regulator dial was born in the eighteenth century from master laboratory clocks: reference instruments used by master watchmakers to calibrate serial productions. In those wall clocks, readability of the seconds was paramount; as a result, minutes occupied the larger central hand, hours were moved to a separate sub-compartment — traditionally at 12 o'clock — and seconds appeared at 6 o'clock. Three hands, three distinct axes, no overlap. The first serial wristwatch with this layout was the Chronoswiss Régulateur of 1987, signed by Gerd-Rüdiger Lang: a reference that established the modern vocabulary of the thing. Since then, every variant — hours at 3 o'clock, seconds at 9 o'clock, minutes in the center, or double regulator with vertical axis for time and horizontal for calendar — is a reinterpretation of that principle: spatially separate functions to eliminate reading ambiguity.
The mechanical regulator is a completely different story. It serves to modify the balance wheel frequency by acting on the effective length of the hairspring. In its most elementary form it's a sliding lever on an engraved scale. The swan-neck version — swan-neck or goose-neck, nomenclature varies — adds a spring with a curvilinear profile that keeps the cursor in position with constant pressure, eliminating the play you get with simple friction regulators. The practical result is more stable rate over time and better shock resistance. It's not just aesthetics, even though in certain calibers the spring finishing is clearly designed to be seen. There's also the double-arrow regulator — designed by Charles Fleck, visible in the original Caliber 135 — and the silent magnetic regulator, used by Blancpain and Vacheron Constantin in minute repeaters to control striking time without audible friction that would cloud the sound.
At the bench, when a customer brings me a watch with a regulator dial asking if it's a complication, I always answer: it's a reading choice, not a mechanical complication. The complication, if any, lies in the movement, not in the dial layout.
