Varanus: monitor lizard leather for dress watch

Varanus is not a leather that stands out from a distance. The scales are flat, geometric, and dense—a natural pattern that is closer to a textile texture than to a reptile. CITES Appendix II regulated, vegetable-tanned leather.

Lizard is exotic leather derived from monitor reptiles — Asian Argentatus Monitor and African Nile Monitor. Flat, dense, geometrically uniform scales. A texture that no other leather reproduces. Regulated CITES Appendix II: traceable, legal, rare.

Vegetable tanned. Available in 18, 20 and 22mm. It pairs with dress watches and ultra-flat watches — the right material for those who want character without stating it out loud.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is varano and which animal does this leather come from?

Varano is a monitor reptile. The leather is sourced from the belly of the Asian Varanus Argentatus or the African Nile Monitor. Flat, geometric, densely-packed scales. Vegetable tanning. Available in 18, 20 and 22mm.

How do you clean and maintain a varano leather strap?

Varano is sensitive to moisture. Remove it from the watch every 2-3 months, wipe it with a dry cloth and apply light conditioning. Avoid submersion and heavy rain. The dense scales of the Nile Monitor trap dirt at the edges: use a thin brush to clean between the scales.

Can you order a custom varano strap in the atelier?

Varano is built by appointment, in the atelier at Via XX Settembre 15, Milan. The leather is selected together, on your watch. Sizing is taken there, not remotely. Book via WhatsApp or request an appointment directly.

Is varano suitable for someone who wears their watch in humid conditions?

Varano is sensitive to moisture. It is not the right choice for those who wear their watch in wet conditions or with frequent perspiration. In case of accidental water contact, dry immediately with a clean cloth. Available in 18, 20 and 22mm.

Which watches pair well with a varano strap?

Varano is a dress watch leather. The models I pair it with most often: Vacheron Constantin Égérie in 18mm, Breguet Classique in 18mm, Longines La Grande Classique in 18mm. Also available in 20 and 22mm for more structured watches.

Is varano a legal leather to purchase in Italy?

Yes. Varano is regulated under CITES Appendix II: legal commerce, but with mandatory proof of origin certification. Every Milano Straps varano strap — available in 18, 20 and 22mm — is traceable and can be purchased in Italy without restrictions, provided it is accompanied by the correct documentation.

What is the difference between varano leather and crocodile leather?

Varano has smaller, denser and more geometric scales compared to crocodile. The pattern is almost textile-like, more refined. Crocodile dominates with large, recognizable scales. Varano communicates understated luxury. Available in 18, 20 and 22mm.
