Galuchat: the leather of the marine stingray

Stingray – or “galuchat” for those who have been working with leather for decades – has a surface that one doesn’t forget. Small bone granules distributed under the epidermis create an almost sandy, uniform texture, impossible to replicate with any other material.

Galuchat is marine stingray leather. The bony nodules distributed under the epidermis create an almost sandy, scratch-resistant texture.

Its processing requires specific skills and careful vegetable tanning. With use, it develops a patina. Available in 18, 20, and 22mm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I really wear a galuchat strap on a Rolex Submariner or Patek Philippe Aquanaut?

Absolutely, and the result is striking. Galuchat on a 41mm Submariner creates a fascinating contrast with the brushed steel case — the nodular texture catches light differently than smooth leather. On an Aquanaut (around 40mm), galuchat enhances the watch's retro sportiness, playing into its "lived-in" leather character. Galuchat's structural resistance makes it suitable for dive straps too. One caveat: galuchat dislikes prolonged repeated immersion in fresh water. If you wear it for occasional swimming, fine. If you swim daily, I'd suggest more traditional leather.

Is galuchat CITES protected? Can I really buy it?

Smart question. The ray is indeed subject to CITES regulation in many countries, as some species are vulnerable. At Milano Straps, we work exclusively with certified suppliers guaranteeing legal origin and raw material sustainability. The galuchat we use has complete documentation and traceability. I can assure you every strap we sell is legal and imported under international regulations. If you buy from uncertified sources, then yes, legal risk exists. With us, zero issues.

How do I clean and maintain a galuchat strap? Is it difficult?

Not difficult, just mindful. Galuchat won't tolerate harsh cleaners. A damp sponge in lukewarm water, light rubbing, then air-dry naturally. If nodules accumulate dirt (dust trapped in texture), a soft brush — like a barber brush — is your best friend. Avoid greasy creams; if you use balm, choose light formulas without silicones. Galuchat ages magnificently: natural patina is desired, not a problem. Store it in a dry environment. If you accidentally wet it, dry immediately and avoid direct sunlight. With these small steps, a galuchat strap will last you decades and become increasingly fascinating.

How do you clean and maintain a galuchat strap?

The bony granules making galuchat scratch-resistant also trap dust. Every 2-3 months, pass a soft dry cloth against the grain. Avoid liquids and creams not specific to exotic leather. Aging is part of the material — don't fight it.

What are the natural nodules of galuchat ray and what makes them resistant?

Galuchat ray nodules are small bony granules naturally distributed beneath the epidermis. They're not decorative — they're structural. That bone density is what makes the leather scratch-resistant. Available from 18 to 22mm lug width.

What is galuchat and which animal does the leather come from?

Galuchat is the leather of the ray. Bony nodules distributed beneath the epidermis, vegetable tanning, tight and resistant weave. We work it in 18, 20 and 22mm lug width.

Is it possible to order a custom galuchat strap at the atelier?

The atelier is at Via XX Settembre 15, Milan. We work by appointment only: galuchat leather is chosen together, measurement is taken on your watch. To book a meeting, contact us via WhatsApp or request an appointment from the contacts page.

How does galuchat age with daily wear?

Galuchat develops patina with daily use. The nodules gradually soften, the tone deepens. It requires mindful maintenance — but it ages well. Available in 18, 20 and 22mm lug width.
