Python Straps — Scales that last

The python imitates no structure. The polygonal scales covering its skin are a geometric pattern that has existed in nature for millions of years — and you can feel it even before you see it.

The python has three-dimensional polygonal scales that no other leather replicates. Irregular pattern, impossible to reproduce artificially. Available in 18, 20 and 22mm. Water sensitive — treat with care.

Controlled by CITES Appendix II. Each piece requires a certificate of origin. The reticulated, the most robust of the species, holds up well on 20-22mm straps. The Bivittatus is better suited for an 18-20mm dress watch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have a python strap made for my Rolex Submariner or Omega Seamaster?

Technically yes, but with caveats. Python, due to its irregular structure, works better on wider lug widths (20-22mm). On a 40mm Submariner (20mm lug width) it's possible, but the irregular texture of the scales can create visual asymmetries on the sides that are more noticeable on a narrow strap. Same logic applies to a Seamaster (20-21mm). I'd recommend python for larger, sportier models where the natural asymmetry becomes part of the appeal. If you want python on a slimmer size, we evaluate the project together.

Is python really controlled by CITES? Does this affect the strap price?

Yes, python falls under CITES Appendix II, meaning trade is regulated but not prohibited, provided it's documented. For Milano Straps, this requires provenance verification on the raw leather I source from qualified suppliers. This traceability has a cost, and yes, it impacts the final strap price. A python strap will cost more than calf or nubuck, but slightly less than high-end crocodile. The difference is worth the legal certainty and peace of mind owning a legitimate accessory.

Chanel stopped using python in 2019. Can I still find vintage Chanel python straps and how do they age?

Yes, python straps and accessories made by Chanel through 2018-2019 are still available in the pre-owned luxury market. Their maintenance is delicate: python is less robust than crocodile and fears excessive moisture and dryness. If you own a vintage Chanel python strap (often paired with bags and bracelets), avoid prolonged direct sunlight exposure and maintain moderate relative humidity. Once a year, apply a balm specific to exotic leathers, never generic oil. If the strap shows tears in the scales, repair is difficult and expensive: prevention is key. For a Patek Philippe Nautilus or dress watch, a vintage Chanel python strap is a rarity statement.

What animal does python leather come from?

Python is a snake. The leather is sourced from the whole animal, with polygonal scales forming a geometric pattern impossible to replicate. Available in 18, 20 and 22mm.

How do you clean and store a python strap?

Python scales trap dust and skin salt. Clean with a dry cloth every 2-3 months, no water. The leather is moisture-sensitive. No standard creams: use one specific for exotics, applied with strokes following the direction of the scales.

Is it possible to order a custom python strap at the atelier?

At Via XX Settembre 15 in Milan, python is chosen together — scale by scale, on the watch. Measurements are taken at the atelier. To book an appointment, write on WhatsApp.

Which watches pair best with a python strap?

20mm python pairs well with a Patek Philippe 3970. The scales' irregular pattern works better on dress watches and refined sports models. The reticulated texture, more robust, holds on 20-22mm.
