Elk leather: the Northern hide that isn't afraid of water

Elk leather is one of the lesser-known leathers in Italian watchmaking. Open fibrous structure, naturally oily surface, coarse grain. It doesn't resemble anything you see on the shelves.

Elk leather (Alces alces) is among the least used leathers in Italian watchmaking. Open fibrous structure, naturally oily surface, coarse and irregular grain. With vegetable tanning, it develops a warm patina that turns honey-colored. More tolerant to humidity than conventional calfskin — not waterproof, but resistant to daily use in varying conditions.

It's not the leather for a dress watch. It's the right one for a tool watch, a work GMT, a field watch. Available in 18, 20, and 22mm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does moose leather handle water better than other leathers?

Better than conventional calf, yes. The open fibrous structure and natural fat content in moose leather make it more tolerant of moisture. It's not waterproof — no leather is — but it recovers from water exposure without deforming the way calf would. For a tool watch worn in variable conditions, it's a solid choice.

Can the rustic grain of moose leather be softened?

Not entirely, and it wouldn't be right to try. The coarse, irregular grain is the nature of this leather — attempting to uniform it would mean losing what makes it interesting. Wax will nourish and soften the feel, but the texture stays as it is. It's a material for those who appreciate straps with character, not those chasing formal perfection.

Which watches pair well with moose leather?

Tool and adventure watches: Rolex Explorer, Explorer II, GMT-Master in steel. Panerai Luminor Base or Marina at 22mm. IWC Pilot Mark. On these, moose makes sense — the material's robustness aligns with the watch's spirit. On a dress watch it would be out of place.

Why is moose leather more tolerant of moisture than calf?

The open fibrous structure of Alces alces retains natural oils in the leather. These oils create a passive moisture barrier, without chemical waterproofing. Conventional calf doesn't have this structure. Available from 18 to 22mm.

Can I order a custom moose leather strap from Casati Milano atelier?

The atelier is at Via XX Settembre 15, Milan. Entry by appointment: bring the watch, choose the leather together, define the lug width on the actual case. No catalogs, no compromises. To book, just message on WhatsApp or request an appointment from the website.

What is moose leather and why is it different from other leathers?

Moose leather (Alces alces) has an open fibrous structure and naturally oily surface — two characteristics conventional calf doesn't have. Vegetable tanning highlights this raw grain, producing a patina that shifts toward honey over time. Available in 18, 20, and 22mm.

How do you clean and maintain a moose leather strap?

The natural oily surface of moose already protects it. Every 2-3 months, apply a neutral grease sparingly with a dry cloth. Avoid harsh products: they strip the natural oils and flatten the grain. Water isn't a problem — air dry, never with heat.

How does moose leather color change over time?

Vegetable tanning leaves the grain free to react to use. Over time, the surface shifts toward honey tones — warmer, darker in contact areas. On 20mm or 22mm, patina concentrates first at the edges and under the lug. It's not uniform aging. It's a signature.
