Suede Watch Straps

Suede leather on the grain side — the normally glossy surface becomes velvety. For a strap, it requires carefully selected hides, as every imperfection remains visible.

Suede: the nap grown above the grain

Suede is obtained by sanding the grain side of the leather — the upper, normally glossy side — until a short, uniform nap is raised. It is the opposite of nubuck, which sands the flesh side. On a strap it gives a velvety, dry hand that shifts in tone depending on the angle of the light. It never takes on a shine. It does not soil if treated with the right water-repellent wax during production.

I work mainly with two variants: Italian suede from vegetable-tanned calfskin, and English suede from thicker English hides. The first is soft from the start, with dense colours (tobacco, petrol blue, burgundy rust). The second is more structured — the colour is more diffused, the thickness holds better over time, but it takes a few months on the wrist to soften.

Dress suede on a dress watch (Datejust 36, Patek Calatrava, Reverso Tribute) is a classic 1960s choice. On sports watches (Submariner, Speedmaster) it is a coherent contrast only if the leather is dark and mature — a light suede on a Submariner tells a different story.
