Changing the strap requires removing the two lateral spring bars from the case. Use a spring bar tool to press the pin inward, releasing the original strap. Subsequently, insert the new strap's pins into the case lugs, ensuring they are perfectly aligned. The procedure is reversible and requires no specialised tools beyond a standard spring bar tool, available in basic maintenance kits.

Durability depends on material, tanning method and daily use. A quality calf strap withstands 3-5 years of regular use before showing significant wear. Vegetable-tanned alligator has superior longevity, 5-8 years, owing to the skin's more robust structure. Vulcanised rubber offers the longest lifespan (10+ years) but may require replacement sooner for aesthetic rather than structural reasons. Regular maintenance and periodic strap rotation (alternating with others) significantly extend these timeframes.
