The Nautilus 5712GR-001, seen from the bench

The Nautilus 5712 Rose Gold/White Gold is a 40mm white gold sports watch designed by Gérald Genta in 1976. This reference 5712GR features a moon phase complication and power reserve indicator. The case features Genta's iconic porthole profile with integrated geometry requiring precise proportions. Custom strap attachment fitting available.

Frequently asked questions

Can a standard strap be fitted to the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5712GR-001?

No. The bracelet is integrated directly into the case: there is no standard lug to attach a conventional strap. The attachment geometry is proprietary and requires a bespoke approach. In the atelier I build the strap on the watch itself, starting from the actual case.

How does the bespoke strap service work for this Nautilus?

I work through Casati Milano, by appointment only, at Via XX Settembre 15 in Milan. I take measurements directly from the case at the bench, with no approximations. Every attachment is shaped by hand to follow the original curves of Genta's profile.

Which leather do I recommend for this model?

I prefer Mississippi Alligator with a large scale. The Nautilus has a dual character — sporting in shape, elegant in materials — and alligator holds both sides without compromising either. It ages with personality rather than fading over time. For those who want something that feels lived-in from the start, natural Barenia would be my second choice.

How long does a well-made strap last on a watch like this?

A properly constructed strap, made with top-grade leather and solid stitching, lasts five to eight years of regular wear. A great deal depends on how it is treated: kept away from water, allowed to breathe between uses. Alligator and Barenia do not deteriorate — they transform, taking on the character of the person wearing them.

What makes the complication on the 5712GR-001 technically interesting?

This Nautilus carries both a moon phase and a power reserve indicator — two complications sharing a case built around a precise, angular geometry. It was never a case designed to house complications: Patek made it work without altering the proportions of the original 1976 design. That is the detail I find most honest about this watch.
