Strap for Nautilus 5712 White Gold / Grey

The bracelet is integrated into the case: there are no standard lugs to which an off-the-shelf strap can be attached. The attachment is proprietary — it was born with the watch. The only viable path is to have a strap made to measure, directly on the watch, in the atelier.

I work through <a href="/pages/casati-booking">Casati Milano</a>, by appointment only, at Via XX Settembre 15 in Milan. The watch comes to the bench, I take measurements from the actual case — not from spec sheets — and I build each attachment to follow the exact curvature of that specific piece. There is no template: every strap starts from scratch.

For a white gold watch with a blue dial and complications such as a moon phase, my choice falls on Mississippi alligator in midnight blue or hand-patinated Barenia. Alligator holds its own against the weight of the watch without overpowering it; Barenia, over time, develops a patina that tells years of real wear. Both have the right character for a watch that is sporting without ever losing its elegance.

A quality leather strap, properly cared for, easily lasts five, seven, even ten years. Keep it away from water and treat it every few months with a natural conditioner. Over time it does not deteriorate — it transforms, taking shape from the wrist, changing colour unevenly and becoming recognisably yours. That is what I expect from a strap made properly.

Gérald Genta designed it in 1976 as a provocation: a watch robust in spirit but refined in form. The 5712G-001 pushes that tension even further — moon phase, power reserve, small seconds. It is not a diving watch; it is a wrist piece for people who live. A well-built leather strap of real character does not betray anything. If anything, it shifts the watch towards something more personal and less serial.
