Frequently asked questions

Can a standard strap be fitted to the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711G-001?

No. The Nautilus bracelet is integrated directly into the case: the attachment is proprietary and a standard buckle simply has nothing to grip. This is one of the reasons why this watch requires a completely different approach compared to an ordinary strap change. At the atelier I build the attachment to measure, working from the actual case.

How does the bespoke strap process work for this Nautilus?

Everything goes through Casati Milano, by appointment only at Via XX Settembre 15, Milan. I bring the watch to the bench, take measurements directly from the white gold case and shape the attachment by hand to follow the original geometry. I do not work from templates or moulds: every strap is born on the client's watch.

Which leather do I recommend for this Nautilus?

For a watch with this character — sporting at heart, elegant in its materials — I choose aged Barenia. It develops a patina with wear that tells the passage of time without ever looking neglected. Against a white gold case, the warm contrast of Barenia works better than any surface-treated leather.

How long does a well-made strap last?

With quality leather and sensible daily use, ten years is a realistic expectation — and often you go beyond that. Care is straightforward: keep the leather away from prolonged water exposure and treat it every few months with a natural conditioner. Good leather does not deteriorate: it changes, softens and takes the shape of the wrist.

The Nautilus was born as a sports watch — does it make sense to fit it with a leather strap?

Gérald Genta designed it in 1976 with something specific in mind: a watch that worked equally well on a boat or at dinner. That dual character is in the Nautilus DNA. A leather strap does not betray the watch — it simply shifts the balance towards elegance, which on a white gold reference already takes precedence.
