Frequently asked questions

Can a standard strap be fitted to the Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167A-012?

No. The bracelet is integrated into the case: there is no conventional lug to attach an off-the-shelf strap. The attachment is part of the watch's own architecture, designed by Patek Philippe as a structural element. In the atelier I build every strap directly on the watch, to the millimetre.

How does the bespoke strap service for the Aquanaut work?

I work by appointment only at Casati Milano, Via XX Settembre 15, Milan. You bring the watch: I take measurements from the actual case, not from a diagram. Every curve and every transition is studied by hand before the leather is cut.

Which leather do I recommend for the Aquanaut 5167A-012?

I recommend vegetable-tanned Tuscan leather, natural and unlacquered. The Aquanaut has a sporting soul but a restrained presence: a leather that ages with character suits it far better than any glossy finish. If the client wants something with a stronger personality, Mississippi alligator in blue is my preferred choice — it works well with the embossed dial without overwhelming it.

How long does a well-made strap last?

A strap made with quality leather and solid stitching easily lasts five, even eight years of regular wear. It depends on how it is worn and how much care is given: clean leather, never constantly wet, left to breathe. Over time, vegetable-tanned leather moulds to the wrist and develops a patina that tells the story of use — it does not hide it.

When was the Aquanaut created and what sets it apart from Patek's other sports watches?

The Aquanaut was launched in 1997. Patek Philippe introduced it as a contemporary alternative to the Nautilus, with a rounded octagonal case — the 'Grenade' shape — and an embossed Tropical dial that breaks with the maison's classical aesthetic. What I have always found compelling is the balance: it is not a pure dive watch, nor a dress watch. It sits between the two, with a rare design coherence.
