The lug width is 18mm. This measurement is specific to the Speedmaster 38 and is smaller than the 20mm of the Speedmaster 42mm. It is essential to verify strap compatibility: 20mm straps cannot be used on this model.

It depends on usage and personal preference. Black or dark brown alligator amplifies sports credibility. Vegetable-tanned Tuscan calf offers patina and versatility. Burgundy Shell Cordovan is sophisticated for those who appreciate leather evolution over time. Black FKM rubber is ideal for intensive use and humid environments.

The lug is fitted into the case via a spring bar that is removed using a precision tool (spring bar tool). Position the tool in the lug hole, compress the elastic pin, extract it gently. Insert the new strap by aligning the holes at the ends, then refit the spring bar. Verify that it is fully locked before wearing the watch.

The original Omega has a spring bar and buckle in certified satin and polished stainless steel, with minimal tolerances. High-quality artisanal aftermarket straps (such as those by Casati Milano) offer superior natural materials (alligator, Shell Cordovan, vegetable-tanned leathers) and customization, with durability comparable to or superior to the original over the years.

A quality alligator or Shell Cordovan strap lasts 5-8 years with moderate daily use. Vegetable-tanned calf: 3-5 years. Lifespan depends on ambient humidity, direct sun exposure, and maintenance (storage in a dry place, cleaning with a cloth). Chronographs, when worn on a leather strap, do not suffer wear from the case steel on the leather, so durability is linked only to the quality of the leather itself.
