Strap for Portugieser Chrono-Automatic Red Gold / Silver / Diamond

The lug width of the IWC Portugieser IW3714-84 is 20.00 mm. This measurement refers to the internal width of the lug where the strap attaches. To verify it, place a ruler inside the lug without pressure; the distance from one wall to the other must be exactly 20 mm. Do not confuse this measurement with the case diameter (40.90 mm), as they are two different dimensions.

For a rose gold Portugieser, we recommend straps in cognac or honey alligator, bourbon-coloured shell cordovan, or calf leather with vegetable tanning in dark brown or black. Alligator offers fascinating historical continuity; shell cordovan develops a patina that evolves over time in harmony with the gold; vegetable-tanned calf maintains a sober profile. For daily use and extreme conditions, technical rubber straps are a modern and functional alternative.

The strap is changed using a spring bar removal tool or a small flat-head screwdriver. Position the watch with the lug facing upwards. Insert the tool into the small side hole of the spring and gently push downwards to release the pin. Repeat on the other side. Be careful not to scratch the case. For first-time changes, consult an experienced watchmaker.

Any strap with a 20 mm lug width is compatible with the Portugieser IW3714-84. However, we recommend prioritising noble materials such as alligator, shell cordovan, vegetable-tanned calf or technical rubber, which respect the aesthetics and value of the watch. Avoid low-quality straps, as they will contrast visibly with the rose gold case.

A high-quality leather strap (alligator, shell cordovan, vegetable-tanned calf) typically lasts 3–5 years with regular use, provided adequate maintenance. Prolonged exposure to water and sweat shortens this lifespan. Store the strap in a dry place; in summer or during sporting activities, alternate with rubber straps. Artisanal straps of excellent craftsmanship often exceed these timescales if treated with care.
