Frequently asked questions

Can a standard strap be fitted to the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 25977BA.OO.D088CR.01?

No. The bracelet is integrated directly into the case: there are no traditional lugs to attach a standard strap. The attachment is proprietary and requires a solution built specifically around the watch. In the atelier I make it bespoke, starting from the actual geometry of the case.

How does the bespoke strap service work for this Royal Oak?

I work exclusively through Casati Milano, my atelier at Via XX Settembre 15 in Milan, by appointment only. I bring the watch to the bench, take measurements directly from the case, and build the attachment around that specific geometry. I do not work from photographs or spec sheets: every millimetre depends on the actual piece in front of me.

Which leather do I recommend for this Royal Oak in yellow gold?

I recommend naturally aged Barenia. The Royal Oak has a strong, almost provocative character, and Barenia shares that same underlying firmness: it starts compact, then softens and takes the shape of the wrist over time. On yellow gold, the warm tone of Barenia creates a visual continuity that feels very coherent with Genta's original design.

How long does a well-made strap last on a watch of this calibre?

With quality leather and minimal care, five years is a starting point, not a ceiling. Keep it away from prolonged exposure to water and condition it occasionally with a neutral leather conditioner. Good leather does not deteriorate: it transforms, developing a patina that tells the story of use — and for me, that is the sign that the work was done properly.

What makes the Royal Oak such a radical design even today?

Gérald Genta drew it in a single night in 1972, breaking every convention: a sports watch in steel — or in this case gold — with an octagonal case, exposed screws, and an integrated bracelet that looked like nothing else in existence. I have seen many watches at the bench over the years, but the Royal Oak's architecture remains one of the few where every formal decision has a precise internal logic. It is not ornament: it is structure.
