With basic care — keeping it away from prolonged water exposure, conditioning the leather every few months with a neutral product — I have seen alligator straps last ten, twelve years without losing structure. Well-tanned leather does not deteriorate: it transforms, bearing the mark of the person who wears it. It is one of the few things in watchmaking that genuinely improves with honest use.

It is the most deliberate statement Audemars Piguet has made in the twenty-first century: a layered octagonal geometry with double-curved sapphire crystals, requiring thirty assembly operations for the case alone. I have had the chance to hold it several times — the constructional complexity is felt through touch before it is even seen. It is not a variation on an existing theme: it is an entirely new formal language.
