Tourbillon multi-assiale

Definition
The conventional tourbillon compensates for gravity on a single plane: it works well when the watch is held vertically, but does nothing on other planes. The multi-axis tourbillon was created to overcome this limitation by adding concentric cages that rotate on independent axes at different speeds, carrying the escapement through multiple orientations over the course of a few seconds.
Even the two-axis tourbillon — two axes, two cages — requires a remarkable engineering leap compared to the classical version. Each added axis multiplies friction, inertia, and the number of components. In the three-axis tourbillon by Henri Grandjean for The Magician, the three cages complete their cycles in 10, 18, and 60 seconds respectively; motion is transmitted through two overlapping transparent discs, one receiving motion from the fixed gear wheel, the other incorporating the teeth. In the Purnell Escape II, based on Eric Coudray's Spherion mechanism, the times are 8, 16, and 30 seconds for the three cages. In Jacob & Co.'s Astronomia Revolution Four-Axis, the fourth axis brings cycles to 60, 18, 15, and 60 seconds respectively.
JLC took a different path with the Gyrotourbillon and then the Heliotourbillon of the Duometre: the latter uses three titanium cages rotating on ceramic ball bearings, with a total cage weight of 163 components under 0.7 grams. The cylindrical spiral inside it is a specialty of the manufacture. The Marco Lang Seven Spheres pushes the concept to the extreme with seven nested rings offset by 30° each: energy must travel through seven levels of gears before reaching the escapement, and the outer ring takes a full hour to complete one revolution.
From the workbench, one thing must be said clearly: beyond three axes, the real chronometric gain becomes difficult to measure and easy to dispute. The friction introduced by each additional cage can negate the theoretical benefit of gravitational compensation. The multi-axis tourbillon beyond a certain threshold is a demonstration of mechanical virtuosity and manufacturing capability, not necessarily a guarantee of superior precision. The buyer must know what they are purchasing. The meaningful comparison remains with a well-regulated single-axis tourbillon: more compact, less friction, and in many contexts more precise.
