Gabbia tourbillon

Definition

The cage is the physical heart of the tourbillon: a rotating structure that houses the balance wheel, the pallet arbor and the escapement, completing one revolution per minute — or every three, in some solutions — to compensate for rate errors induced by gravity when the watch is in a vertical position. The weight of the cage is the critical variable. A heavy cage consumes energy to rotate, depletes the power reserve and loads the gear train. This is why titanium has become the reference material: the Breguet caliber 581 and the Tourbillon 2 from another manufacture reach cages of 0.29 grams, a value that reduces inertia to the point of allowing power reserves exceeding five days.

The structural support of the cage divides architectures into two families. In the classical tourbillon the cage is held by bridges on both the front and back of the movement. In the flying tourbillon — flying tourbillon — it is anchored on one side only, with no bridge visible from the dial: less friction, open view of the mechanism, but greater complexity in balancing. When mass is not distributed symmetrically, as happens in certain flying tourbillons with asymmetrical upper cage, it is necessary to insert a hidden counterweight beneath the cage itself.

The Exo Tourbillon moves the balance wheel outside the cage, upward. The result is twofold: the cage becomes lighter and the balance wheel can be sized beyond the limits imposed by internal space, with more adjustment screws available. Montblanc and other manufactures have chosen this path to gain precision without increasing the thickness of the movement.

The inclination of the cage — as in the 30° tourbillon of certain complex movements — is a choice both technical and aesthetic: it changes the angle from which the complication is perceived and can modify the response to positions of wear. The armillary tourbillon takes the concept to extreme consequences: the cage assumes the form of a biaxial armillary sphere, with rotation on two axes, approaching three-dimensional compensation of gravity.

Dead-beat seconds on some tourbillons — the discrete advancement of the cage step by step every second rather than continuous rotation — are not an additional complication: they are how the cage itself functions as a seconds indicator, making the escapement's beat visible without adding parts.
