Watch Terminology

At the workbench every day, you quickly see who has truly handled watches and who has only read forums: technical terminology is a precise filter. Some terms are universal, others belong to more recent jargon, often English-speaking, that has invaded Italian conversation without anyone bothering to translate it. It is worth putting things in order.

Let's start with case measurements. The lug-to-lug — the distance between opposite ends of the lugs, measured in millimeters — tells you how much the watch occupies your wrist along the vertical axis, regardless of case diameter. A 42 mm diameter with lug-to-lug of 46 mm wears better than a 40 mm with lugs extended to 50. It is the measurement I look at first when I assess the wearability of a piece.

On the bezel: a unidirectional bezel rotates only counterclockwise. If it is moved accidentally during a dive, the estimated time lengthens, never shortens. It is a choice of active safety, not decoration. The English term unidirectional bezel is used in technical Italian as well, but the translation stands perfectly.

The sandwich dial is composed of two overlaid layers: the opaque upper layer has cutouts at the indices, the transparent lower layer contains the luminescent mass. The resulting visual depth is real, not a painting effect. In vintage pieces from the 1960s and 1970s it was standard construction; today it has come back into fashion, often as an aesthetic citation.

On the movement front: the micro-rotor is an automatic winding system with a reduced oscillating mass, integrated in the plane of the movement rather than layered on top. It allows better visibility of the plate. The frequency of a caliber is expressed in vph — vibrations per hour — where each vibration corresponds to half an oscillation of the balance wheel. At 36,000 vph you have 5 Hz, with a resolution to one-fifth of a second on the seconds hand.

The flying tourbillon differs from the classic tourbillon by the single support of the cage: no upper bridge, opening visible on one side. Beautiful to see, but structurally more delicate.

Some terms are purely commercial categories: GADA (Go Anywhere, Do Anything) describes a versatile watch for different contexts; desk diver is an ironic label for technical divers who never touch water. Both say something real about how certain watches are bought and worn.

Finally, Rolesor is a term registered by Rolex to indicate the combination of steel and gold in case and bracelet. It is not a generic synonym for two-tone: it belongs only to that brand and to that commercial language.
