Unidirectional bezel

Definition
The unidirectional bezel rotates in only one direction — almost always counterclockwise — and this choice is not aesthetic: it is a safety measure codified in the ISO 6425 standard for professional diving watches. The logic is simple and brutal. If the bezel is accidentally struck during a dive, it can only shift the reference toward shorter times, never toward longer times. In other words, the diver sees a reduced safety margin and hurries to ascend. The opposite error — believing you have more time than you actually do — can be fatal.
On the bench I have seen decades of variations on this same principle. The most common version is the external bezel in steel or ceramic, with a graduated insert on a 60-minute scale and a luminescent point at 12 o'clock, called a pip or dot, used as a starting reference. The number of clicks that mark the rotation varies: 60 clicks — one per minute — is the classic standard, but there are bezels with 120 clicks (each click equals 3°) that offer greater resolution and a more precise feel under gloves. Each click must be crisp, with no residual play.
There are then less common but technically interesting solutions. IWC on the Aquatimer brought the bezel inside, under the crystal, operated by a secondary crown: no exposed moving parts, no risk of rotation from friction with the wetsuit. Yema patented a mechanical locking system on the external bezel that physically prevents any accidental rotation — useful, although it adds an operational step. In both cases the safety principle remains identical: time can only decrease, never increase.
The unidirectional stopping mechanism is typically a ratchet: a leaf spring or ball spring catches in the teeth of an internal toothed wheel, allowing movement in one direction and blocking it in the other. Over time I have disassembled bezels with ratchets in brass, tempered steel, and technical ceramic. The durability and precision of the click depend almost entirely on the quality of the ratchet and the number of teeth on the wheel. An economical bezel loses its crisp click after a few years of intensive use; a well-constructed bezel maintains it for decades.
The term unidirectional also applies to the rotors of automatic movements with unidirectional winding, where the oscillating weight recharges the barrel spring in only one direction. The mechanical principle is analogous — ratchet and toothed wheel — but the functional context is different and should not be confused with the bezel.
