Definition
Technical ceramics in watchmaking is not the aesthetic coating ceramic from the 1980s: it's a structural material obtained by sintering powders of zirconium oxide or alumina, compacted under extremely high pressure and fired at over a thousand degrees. The result is a homogeneous mass, not a surface treatment. This distinction matters greatly at the workbench: a scratch on a technical ceramic case exposes no underlying metal, because the color and hardness run through the entire piece.
Rado introduced high-tech ceramics in 1962 with the DiaStar, using alumina. The industry then shifted to zirconium, which offers superior impact toughness and finer optical finish. Maurice Lacroix advanced the formulation by adding hafnium, yttrium, and aluminum oxides to the base zirconium, improving thermal stability and crack propagation resistance. Hublot works on mass-pigmented ceramics, where metallic oxides are mixed before firing: when you cut the piece, the color is uniform all the way to the core. That's what sets a Magic Ceramic apart from coated ceramics.
Impact brittleness remains the Achilles heel. Echo/Neutra solves this with an internal Grade 2 titanium frame that absorbs dynamic loads, leaving the external ceramic only to resist abrasion. IWC goes in the opposite direction with Ceratanium, an alloy that engineers the properties of both components within the material itself, with no stratification.
There are then applications that don't concern the case. IWC uses ceramic components at wear points in the Pellaton system, where ceramic spheres replace the metal pins that used to wear out first. Ressence uses contrast-toned ceramic microspheres as a power reserve indicator. The Barrelhand Monolith builds the entire dial in laser-welded ceramics, eliminating paints and adhesives. In all these cases the choice is technical, not decorative.
Cerakote is different from all this: it's a thin-film ceramic coating applied cold to metal. It provides abrasion resistance and matte finish, but lacks the structural thickness of sintered ceramics. Useful on components that must stay light. I wouldn't call it technical ceramics in the strict sense.
At the workbench I've had to explain why a black ceramic bezel becomes slightly hazy over time: it's not wear, it's surface micro-oxidation that alters light reflection. It happens, and it happens even with high-quality ceramics. The mass color doesn't change; the surface does. A soft cloth cleaning almost always fixes it.
