Definition
In watchmaking, the term bidirectional indicates the ability of a component — rotor, bezel, or inner rotating ring — to operate in both directions of rotation without loss of function. It is not merely a mechanical concept: it changes safety, energy efficiency, and in certain contexts, the diver's safety.
On the automatic winding front, the bidirectional rotor transfers energy to the barrel spring by rotating both clockwise and counterclockwise. The practical result is more continuous and uniform charging compared to unidirectional systems, where half of the wrist movements are wasted. IWC's Pellaton system is the most cited example in literature: it exploits cams and a patented gear geometry to reduce friction while maximizing energy recovery in both directions. An analogous principle governs bidirectional ratchet systems — the so-called pawl winding system — which in the IWC 32112 calibre contributes to a 120-hour power reserve. Even bidirectional micro-rotors, such as the tungsten one in Yema's CMM.20 calibre, follow the same logic: reduced mass, double efficiency.
On the bezel front, bidirectional means freedom of rotation in both directions. This freedom is an advantage in GMT and compass contexts — where adjusting a second time zone or orienting yourself requires rapid rotations in any direction — but becomes a risk on dive watches. A bidirectional diver bezel, if rotated accidentally underwater, can increase the apparent remaining air time, making the diver believe they have more air than they actually do. For this reason, since the late 1960s, the bezels of professional dive watches have become almost universally unidirectional. Vintage watches such as the Seiko 62MAS still mounted bidirectional bezels: it is a detail that helps date a piece on the workbench.
The bidirectional inner bezel — such as that on the Longines Legend Diver, commanded by a separate screw-down crown — solves the problem of involuntary access by protecting the scale from sand and impacts, but remains bidirectional in rotation. It should not be confused with the external click bezel. Friction-fit bidirectional bezels, without clicks, offer fluid rotation but zero mechanical resistance: useful on general sports watches, unsuitable for serious diving.
A special case is the skeletonized bidirectional rotor: here bidirectionality is technical, but skeletonization is aesthetic. The two aspects do not imply each other.
