The Gondolo 5111J-001, seen from the bench

The Patek Philippe Gondolo 5111J-001 is a rectangular yellow gold wristwatch created in 1993 as a tribute to the historic collaboration with the Gondolo brothers of Rio de Janeiro. The 30mm case embodies Art Déco design principles with perfect proportions and formal geometry. Custom strap attachment work is available through Atelier Casati Milano using premium materials such as Mississippi alligator or Swift leather.

Frequently asked questions

Can a standard strap be fitted to the Patek Philippe Gondolo 5111J-001?

No. The bracelet is integrated into the case with proprietary attachments: a standard strap simply will not fit. This is one of those watches that does not accept off-the-shelf solutions. I build the strap directly on the case, by hand, in the atelier.

How does the bespoke strap process work for this model?

I work through Casati Milano, by appointment only, at Via XX Settembre 15 in Milan. I bring the watch to the bench, take the measurements directly from the original case, and shape the attachments millimetre by millimetre. There is no template to start from: every piece is built from scratch on that specific watch.

Which leather do I recommend for the Gondolo?

Mississippi Alligator with extra-large scale, without hesitation. The Gondolo is a formal watch with sharp Art Déco lines and warm yellow gold: that large scale brings visual weight and structure, holding its own against the case. I keep Premium Swift for those who prefer something quieter, but on a rectangular case the crocodile works better.

How long does a well-made strap last?

With regular care, ten years is not an unusual result. Quality leather ages well: it softens, takes the shape of the wrist, and gains character over time. The one thing that shortens a strap's life is prolonged exposure to moisture — I always remove mine before washing my hands or heading out in summer rain.

Why does the Gondolo have a rectangular case rather than a round one like most other Patek Philippe watches?

The Gondolo family was created as a tribute to the historic collaboration between Patek Philippe and the Gondolo brothers of Rio de Janeiro, active around the turn of the twentieth century. At that time, rectangular timepieces were the most sophisticated expression of wristwatch making, before the round case became dominant. Patek kept that geometry alive because it tells a specific story, not to follow a trend.
