No. The bracelet is integrated directly into the case: there are no standard lugs to which a conventional strap can be attached. The attachment is proprietary, with a geometry Audemars Piguet built around the Royal Oak's octagonal architecture. The only viable option is a bespoke strap made to measure, directly on the watch, in the atelier.

The watch comes to the bench and I take measurements directly from the case: every millimetre of the attachment is gauged by hand, because no valid template exists for this model. The strap is shaped piece by piece, adapting to the geometric transition between case and leather without approximation.

I prefer naturally aged Barenia. The steel Royal Oak has a sporting character built with formal rigour, and Barenia shares that dual nature: it starts firm and almost austere, then softens and develops a patina that tells the story of use. It is a leather that does not shout, but becomes unmistakable over time. Against the octagonal case, it works better than any overtly worked alligator.

With basic care — keeping it away from prolonged exposure to water and conditioning the leather two or three times a year — I have seen Barenia straps last over ten years while retaining a dignified shape. Quality leather does not deteriorate: it changes. It ages by developing character, not by giving way. A poorly made strap shows its flaws within six months; one built with care improves after three years.

Gérald Genta drew it in 1972 in a single night, on an urgent commission. Before that moment, a steel sports watch at that price was unthinkable: steel was the material of lower segments, gold that of high watchmaking. Genta overturned this logic by placing all the value in constructional complexity — the octagonal bezel with eight exposed screws, the alternating satin and polished finishing, the integrated bracelet — making the craft itself the statement.
