The Royal Oak 26514OR.ZZ.1220OR.01, seen from the bench

The Royal Oak was introduced in 1972 as the first luxury sports watch in steel. Reference 26514OR.ZZ.1220OR.01 features the automatic AP 2924 caliber with visible tourbillon and power reserve indicator. It presents an octagonal case with integrated crown and pushers in the characteristic bezel with visible screws.

Frequently asked questions

Can a standard strap be fitted to the Royal Oak 26514OR.ZZ.1220OR.01?

No. The bracelet is integrated directly into the case: there is no standard lug to attach a regular strap. The fitting is proprietary, conceived by Genta as part of the watch's architecture. The only option is to build the attachment bespoke, directly on the watch itself.

How does the bespoke strap service work for this Royal Oak?

I work exclusively by appointment at Casati Milano, at Via XX Settembre 15 in Milan. I take the watch to the bench, measure directly from the case, and build the attachment by hand, millimetre by millimetre. There are no templates: every piece is made from scratch for that specific watch.

Which leather do I recommend for the Royal Oak in pink gold?

I recommend burnished Mississippi Alligator in a warm tone — tobacco or dark honey. Pink gold has a warm, soft light that tends to fade against cool or very dark leathers. Honey Barenia is another choice I have seen work beautifully: it ages in a remarkable way and complements the gold without overpowering it.

How long does a well-made strap last on a watch of this quality?

With minimal care — keeping it away from water and letting it breathe after wear — a quality leather strap easily lasts five to eight years. Alligator ages by developing a patina that makes it more beautiful over time. A leather strap should not be replaced because it wears out: it should be replaced when you choose to, not when you are forced to.

Why is the Royal Oak's geometry so complex to handle when making a strap?

In 1972, Genta designed the bracelet as an extension of the octagonal case: the links emerge from the case rather than attaching to it. This means any work on the fitting must respect that visual and structural continuity. An error of a few tenths of a millimetre breaks the balance of the entire architecture. That is why I only work after seeing the watch in person.

The next step
