The only sensible approach is to build a strap to measure, starting from the watch itself. I do this in the atelier, working from the actual geometry of the case.

The watch comes to the bench and I take measurements directly from the original attachments — no estimates, no generic templates. Every component is shaped by hand to follow the octagonal geometry of the case.

For a Royal Oak of this standing — steel, sporting character but with precise formal clarity — I prefer Mississippi Alligator with a mirror-finish scale. It holds its own against the polished surfaces of the case without yielding. Barenia is a valid alternative if you want a more lived-in patina over time, but my first choice remains alligator.

A strap built from quality leather and hand-stitched will easily last ten years, often longer. It depends on care: keeping it away from prolonged water exposure, letting it breathe between wears, and conditioning the leather once or twice a year. Barenia, in particular, does not deteriorate — it transforms, developing a patina that tells every year of use.

The Tapisserie is a texture achieved through mechanical guilloché, engraved directly onto the dial with a precision that takes hours of work. Gérald Genta chose it in 1972 to give visual depth to a sporting steel watch, at a time when nobody dared to do it. I have seen many dials over the years: the Tapisserie still has a design coherence that few achieve.
