Tanning — Tannage
concia · conciatura
Definition
Tanning, or tannage, is the process of transforming raw hide into stable, durable, and water-repellent leather. The two main methods are vegetable tanning — using natural tannins extracted from bark, leaves, and roots, requiring long processing times of 30-60 days with low environmental impact — and chrome tanning, which is faster (24-48 hours) but has a greater environmental footprint. At Milano Straps, I work predominantly with Italian vegetable-tanned leather: the leather matures over time, develops a rich patina, and is distinguished by its warm feel and characteristic aroma.
