Spring Drive

Definition
The Spring Drive is neither a mechanical movement nor a quartz movement: it's a third category, patented by Seiko and developed on Grand Seiko, that resolves the fundamental contradiction between energy source and regulation accuracy. Energy is stored and released in the oldest way I know: a mainspring, a barrel, a gear train. But here ends any kinship with any traditional mechanical caliber.
The breaking point is the regulating organ. Where a conventional movement still uses a balance wheel and escapement — with all the friction, shock and energy loss that entails — the Spring Drive uses an electromagnetic brake called a tri-synchro regulator. A rotating disc rotor generates an alternating current as it turns; a quartz oscillator compares that frequency with its own and, if the movement is running too fast, activates the brake for an instant. No impact, no mechanical loss. The most immediate visual result is the seconds hand that glides without ticking, in a continuous motion I don't see in any other mechanical caliber.
The declared accuracy depends on the caliber generation. Current models with the 9R66 hover around ±15 seconds per month. The 9RB2 version, designated Ultra Fine Accuracy (UFA), brings this to ±20 seconds per year: the quartz crystal is aged for three months, sealed under vacuum, characterized at different temperatures, then matched to an ultra-low-power integrated circuit. It's the most accurate spring-driven movement available in production. The 9RB2 measures 30 mm in diameter by 5.02 mm thick, features 34 jewels and claims 72 hours of power reserve; the 9RA2 in five-day versions reaches 120 hours.
One thing I often see confused: the Spring Drive has no battery. All the electrical energy needed for the quartz oscillator is generated inductively by the movement itself. It doesn't need replacing, it doesn't run out as long as you keep wearing it. In this sense the logic of use is identical to that of an automatic.
Servicing in the workshop has its peculiarities. The tri-synchro regulator doesn't disassemble like a traditional escapement; it requires specific instrumentation and, in some cases, replacement of the electronic module as a unit. It's not an impossible procedure, but anyone who has never worked on a Spring Drive caliber would do well not to improvise.
