Definition

A mechanical movement is not simply a watch without a battery: it is a system for converting elastic potential energy into time measurement, engineered at a dimensional scale where every hundredth of a millimeter has direct consequences on accuracy. This is the fundamental difference from any other precision object: a piece of furniture requires about twenty critical design decisions, a camera a few hundred, a wristwatch mechanical movement requires an order of magnitude more, all compressed into a few cubic centimeters.

The operating principle has remained unchanged since the late seventeenth century: a mainspring, contained in the barrel, accumulates elastic potential energy during winding. The barrel gradually releases it to the gear train, which transmits it to the regulating assembly — the beating heart of the system, composed of the escapement and balance wheel. It is the oscillation of the balance wheel, its amplitude, that marks time. Insufficient amplitude compromises both precision and reliability: in movements with a weak balance wheel you see drifts of dozens of seconds per day that cannot be corrected by regulation.

Mechanical movements divide into two major families. Manual winding requires the user to turn the crown every one or two days; automatic winding exploits a rotor moved by wrist motion. Both families may or may not have hacking, that is the instantaneous stopping of seconds upon crown pressure for synchronization. I consider hacking and manual winding two indicators of constructive quality often undervalued by newcomers.

Complications add functions to the simple hour and minute display: chronograph, moon phases with dedicated gearing, mechanical alarm with gong or bell, power reserve, jump hour display. Each multiplies design complexity and the number of components. Swatch's Sistem51 demonstrates that constructive simplicity can be a deliberate choice, not a limitation; the Angelus SF 240 caliber with eight days of power reserve demonstrates the opposite.

Hybrids also exist: mecaquartz calibers combine a mechanical chronograph module — with continuous sweep seconds and instant reset — with a quartz oscillator for the primary time-measuring function. They are not pure mechanical movements, nor are they conventional quartz either. Grand Seiko's Spring Drive occupies yet different territory: mechanical mainspring, regulation via electromagnetic oscillator. I prefer to call them what they are, without hiding their hybrid nature behind marketing labels.
