Definition

18-karat gold is a foundation, not a finish line. The 75% pure gold content remains fixed to meet the standard; the remaining 25% — the alloy — is where manufacturers truly play. Copper, silver, palladium, gallium: by varying proportions and treatments, you achieve radically different hues, hardnesses, and long-term behavior. From the workbench, I immediately recognize the difference between conventional yellow gold and Omega's Moonshine Gold: the latter has an almost lunar luminosity, cooler, less saturated. It's not pure marketing — it's real chemistry.

Omega has developed three distinct alloys. Moonshine Gold (2019) is an 18K with silver, copper, and palladium in proportions that lighten the tone compared to traditional yellow gold, with high resistance to color fade over time. Sedna Gold is the house's rose gold, used on Speedmaster and Constellation. Bronze Gold contains 37.5% gold — 9K fineness — with gallium and palladium: it develops a slow patina without the aggressive verdigris of pure bronze. Three alloys, three different problems solved distinctly.

Rolex works vertically: it smelts and mills gold in-house. Everose is an 18K rose gold with copper at elevated percentages, stable because Rolex controls every stage. Jubilee Gold, introduced on the Day-Date 40, combines yellow, warm gray, and rose tones in a single alloy — an effect you don't achieve with classic yellow gold. Rolesor isn't an alloy but a constructive combination: steel case, bezel and crown in 18K gold.

Hublot focused on hardness. Magic Gold (2011) is the world's first scratch-resistant 18K gold: boron carbide ceramic infiltrated into the gold structure, Vickers hardness around 1000 HV versus 400 HV for conventional gold. The greenish tint is a direct effect of the ceramic. King Gold is instead a classic 5N — 18K with dominant copper — warmer and more reddish, without Magic Gold's scratch-resistant ambitions.

IWC calls its alloy Armor Gold: modified microstructure to increase surface hardness, designed specifically for precious-metal sports cases. A. Lange & Söhne patented Honey Gold in 2010: secret composition, honey color, mechanical resistance superior to standard malleable gold. Breguet also uses a proprietary alloy with gold, silver, copper, and palladium — the same for cases, bridges, and bells in minute repeaters.

In movement, gold also appears in screwed chatons — the supports for ruby pebbles — as in Mühle Glashütte's Robert Mühle series calibers: harder than brass, they resist wear over time in measurable ways. The 5N treatment, instead, is a warm, amber surface finish applied to plates and bridges, not a structural alloy: a precise aesthetic effect, nothing more.
