Definition

In watchmaking, compensation refers to any technical solution designed to neutralize a systematic error: gravity, thermal variations, the declining force of the mainspring, pressure fluctuations in oil-filled movements. It is not a singular concept but a family of responses to specific physical problems.

The tourbillon is the most renowned form of gravitational compensation. The rotating cage — typically one rotation per minute — keeps the balance wheel in continuous motion through different positions, distributing error rather than allowing it to concentrate in one direction. The flying tourbillon eliminates the top bridge: the cage is anchored on one side only, which improves readability and reduces weight, but requires tighter machining tolerances. The biaxial tourbillon rotates on two axes simultaneously, the triaxial on three: each additional axis extends compensation to a plane that the previous one left uncovered. Vacheron Constantin's Armillary — caliber 1990 — adds a spherical hairspring to the biaxial, thus acting on the positional variation that the flat spiral does not correct. Roger Dubuis's Monovortex spins the balance wheel along a conical path, seeking to cover both the horizontal and vertical planes with a single structure.

Thermal compensation operates on a different front. Tissot's Nivachron is a hairspring with antimagnetic properties and thermal stability superior to traditional Anachron: its elastic modulus changes less with temperature variation, so it withstands abrupt transitions better. H. Moser's dual hairspring systems work on isochronism by pairing two symmetrical hairsprings that compensate each other during expansion. Urban Jürgensen's bimetallic thermometers — gold medal 1805 — were instruments complementary to timekeeping precisely because temperature was already the main enemy of consistency.

The fusée-and-chain solves the declining torque of the mainspring during discharge: the chain on the Ferdinand Berthoud Mesure du Temps 1787 counts 777 elements and transmits nearly constant force to the escapement throughout the entire power reserve. It is the oldest mechanical compensation still in production.

In oil-filled movements such as the Ressence Type 3 and Type 5, bellows — seven per case — compensate for the expansion and contraction of oil as temperature and altitude vary. Without them, volume variations would create air bubbles that distort the time reading. From the workbench I have seen examples with gold-plated nickel bellows showing early failure: the current version is built on technical rubber, more durable but requiring attention during service intervals.
