Definition
Shock protection is not an accessory feature: it is one of the most serious technical disciplines in mechanical watchmaking, because a violent impact on the balance wheel can bend the pivot, shift the hairspring, or break the jewel. I have seen dozens of balance wheels arrive at the bench with banana-shaped pivots, almost always after a fall or impact that the owner had judged insignificant.
Systems fall into two conceptually distinct categories. The first protects the balance wheel locally: Incabloc and KIF are the historic names. Both allow the balance wheel pivot to shift laterally under impact, then return it to its seat thanks to a leaf spring. Incabloc was already standard on Swiss railway watches in the 1950s, precisely because train vibrations were continuous and predictable. KIF, in its most robust version, reaches 5000 G of declared resistance: a useful number to know, even though in daily practice you never exceed that threshold naturally.
The second category suspends the entire movement inside the case, isolating it from the external structure. This is the principle of Certina's DS system from 1959, which uses a threaded ring and a thin metal leaf between the dial and movement to distribute shock waves before they reach the gear train. The same principle, taken to a higher engineering level, underlies IWC's SPRIN-g PROTECT: a cantilever spring in bulk metallic glass, an amorphous material verified by Cambridge University, that suspends the movement and distributes impact forces along its entire length. Eight years of development for a spring. This tells you how underestimated the problem is outside the industry.
There are then hybrid solutions. Formex isolates the case itself with a four-screw system and springs integrated into the bezel. MB&F uses the FlexRing to allow daily use of watches with a visible suspended balance wheel, structurally more vulnerable. Urwerk in its air turbines combines anchor damping and shock absorption in a single mechanical element.
A detail often overlooked: high-beat movements at 36,000 hourly beats recover more quickly after a shock compared to 28,800 calibers, because the balance wheel takes less time to return to regime. It does not eliminate the risk of physical damage, but reduces residual rate error. It is a distinction worth remembering when choosing a caliber for intensive use.
Military standard MIL-STD-810 provides for 26 drops onto concrete from 1.22 meters on every surface, edge and corner of the case. It is the most severe test bench I know applied systematically to watches. Those who pass that protocol can declare real robustness, not marketing robustness.
