Minute Repeater

Definition
The minute repeater is the most demanding acoustic complication in mechanical watchmaking, not by convention but for structural reasons: no other function requires so many interdependent subsystems — reading mechanism, energy accumulator, governor escapement, hammers, gongs — to work in sequence without error every time the user activates the slide. I've disassembled enough period repeaters to know that even a single poorly tuned gong renders the mechanism useless, regardless of how finished the plate is.
The operation follows precise logic. By activating the lateral lever — or, in some examples, a button — the mechanism reads the time from the main train, charges an auxiliary spring, and then releases that energy through three sequences of strikes: first the full hours, then the quarters elapsed, finally the remaining minutes beyond the last quarter. Hours, quarters, and minutes are acoustically distinct: typically a low tone marks the hours, a high tone the minutes, a combined double note the quarters. The sequence requires considerable energy, which is why movements with this complication tend to have generous power reserves or, in certain modern cases, a dedicated barrel.
The governor — in English the flying governor, visible on the dial in some contemporary models — is the component that regulates the speed of the strikes. Without it the hammers would strike the gongs uncontrollably, and the sound would be uneven. Tuning the gongs themselves still happens by ear in the most serious workshops: no machine replaces the direct listening of someone filing.
There are lower degrees of the same family: the quarter repeater sounds only hours and quarters, the half-quarter repeater adds the half-hour between one quarter and the next. The petite sonnerie and grande sonnerie belong to a parallel branch: there the striking mechanism activates automatically at regular intervals, without user intervention. Confusion between sonneris and repeaters is common even among those who sell watches for years; technically they are different architectures, even when they coexist in the same movement.
Acoustic quality depends on factors that photographs do not convey: thickness of the case walls, material and geometry of the gongs, mass of the hammers. Some makers have worked on cases with very thin walls to amplify resonance; others have adopted cathedral chimes instead of flat gongs. The result changes radically when listened to. Evaluating a repeater without holding it in your hand and listening to it is, in my experience, an error you pay dearly for.
