Calfskin
Definition
Calfskin is the starting point of every good strap. Not the only destination — there are more exotic, rarer, more costly leathers — but the foundation. A craftsman who doesn't know calfskin doesn't know leather. Calfskin has a finer grain than adult cattle hide, a more compact fibrous structure, a surface that responds better to polishing and dyeing. It is the most versatile leather there is: suited to formal and informal, glossy and matte, thin and thick. The quality of calfskin depends on three factors: the animal, the tanning, and the finishing. Quality calfskin from European farms, vegetable-tanned in an Italian or French tannery, and hand-finished has entirely different characteristics from industrial calfskin that is chrome-tanned and mechanically embossed. For pairing: calfskin is the leather on which I test every new pairing. If it works in calfskin, it works in any material. Black at 20mm on a Submariner, havana brown at 18mm on a Datejust, tan on a Speedmaster — these are the fundamentals of the trade, the ones that never fail.

What is the difference between calfskin and cowhide?
Calfskin has a finer grain and a more compact fibrous structure because the animal is young — the hide hasn't yet undergone the stresses that coarsen adult cattle leather. The result is a smoother, finer surface that is more responsive to dyeing and polishing. For straps worn on dress watches and elegant timepieces, calfskin is superior to adult cowhide.
How do you care for a calfskin strap?
Once a month, a pass with a colourless wax-based cream — not products containing silicone or petroleum, which saturate the fibres instead of nourishing them. Avoid prolonged contact with water: if it gets wet, let it air-dry away from heat sources. Don't keep the strap too tightly fastened when you're not wearing it — the fibres relax better without tension.
How long does a quality calfskin strap last?
With the right care, three to five years of daily use. If you rotate it with other straps, it can last twice as long. The patina it develops over time is one of the reasons many collectors prefer vegetable-tanned calfskin to alligator for everyday wear — it's a leather that tells the story of the years spent with the watch.
