Definition
Nocturnal luminescence in wristwatches stopped being a matter of dangerous chemistry in the early 1950s, when radium gave way to photoluminescent materials first, and then to the alliance between strontium aluminate and organic binders that we now know as Super-LumiNova. The physical principle has remained identical: a material absorbs photons during light exposure, stores them in its crystal structure, and releases them gradually in darkness as visible photoluminescence. Everything else changes: no radioactivity, no irreversible material degradation, no risk to those who manufacture or wear the watch.
Super-LumiNova is a registered trademark of Nemoto & Co., but in technical jargon it has become the common name for the entire category. Formulations are distinguished by designation: C1 is the standard variant with intense green emission, X1 is a high-brightness formulation with extended duration, SLN (Super Luminous Noctilucent) is the designation used by Citizen for its own version. Chromalight is Rolex's proprietary system, with blue emission instead of green, and declared autonomy of up to eight hours. Globolight is another proprietary formulation, still based on strontium aluminate but with a binder that allows thicker applications on hands. The practical difference between these variants concerns three parameters: initial intensity, emission duration, and color in darkness. The color in light depends on the added pigment: white, green, yellow, light blue. The color in darkness depends on the chemical activator used in the crystal.
Application varies depending on the geometry of the piece. On traditional hands, the material fills a cavity milled into the hand itself. On applied indices it fills the internal space. On the dial it can cover the entire surface—the so-called lume dial—or be limited to printed or applied indices only. Three-dimensional applications also exist, where the material is pressed into shaped solid blocks, as in the 3D Super-LumiNova indices found on some models with dials optimized for absolute darkness conditions.
One detail I often see overlooked: the effectiveness of luminescence depends on the time and quality of the preliminary light exposure, not just on the amount of material applied. A twenty-second exposure to direct light is often more effective than hours under diffused artificial lighting. Those who work in nighttime or underwater environments already know this. Those who buy a wristwatch and wonder why the hands are already dark after two hours typically haven't charged the lume correctly before entering darkness.
