Definition

Laser in watchmaking isn't a single technique: it's a family of processes sharing the same physical principle—a beam of coherent, concentrated light that modifies matter—but producing radically different results depending on how it's used. Distinguishing between ablation, sintering, and oxidation isn't academic exercise: it changes everything, from the piece's structure to color permanence.

Laser ablation selectively removes material from the surface. Applied to dials, it creates raised textures, continental designs on titanium, lunar surface representations on movement bridges. The Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Worldtimer uses ablation to achieve a three-dimensional map on grade 5 titanium caseback; the Speedmaster Apollo 8's caliber 3869 uses it on bridges, then covered in dark gray, to imitate lunar soil. In both cases the laser removes, doesn't add.

Laser oxidation works differently: the beam heats titanium with such precision that it controls the oxide forming on the surface, and that oxide is the color. No paint, no enamel. Montblanc developed this technique internally for the Mount Vinson caseback: the result is permanent because the color is in the metal's structure, not on top of it. Similar technique is used on Panerai and Omega caseback and dials.

Laser etching with PVD follows a subtraction logic on layers: a black coating is deposited on the metal, then the laser removes the PVD at precise points, revealing the gold or titanium underneath. Contrast arises from the difference between intact coating and bare metal, often further differentiated with matte or satin finishes on exposed zones.

Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) and Selective Laser Melting (SLM) are additive processes: the laser melts metal powder layer by layer, thickness comparable to a human hair, building internal geometries impossible with CNC milling. Honeycomb structures, internal cavities, lattices: the TAG Heuer Monaco Air 1 weighs 85 grams partly for this reason. Panerai reduces the PAM01495's weight by 25% compared to conventional titanium. Holthinrichs produces 45 cases per cycle in 48 hours, followed by milling and manual finishing. The machine builds, the craftsman refines.

In restoration, the laser deposits molten metal with localized precision where the case is worn or damaged; the file intervenes afterward to restore original geometries. It's one of the few methods allowing material reintegration without full-flame soldering, limiting thermal deformation risk.

A note on guilloché: the term indicates the motif, not the process. Historically obtained with mechanical rose engines, today it's also replicated with laser engraving for production volumes. The visual result can be similar; the genesis is different. Worth knowing the difference before buying.
