Definition

Glashütte is not just a city in Saxony: it is a precise set of constructive and decorative conventions that local manufacturers have shared for a hundred and fifty years. I recognize them immediately when I open a case back, and I don't need to read the brand mark.

The core of Glashütte finishing is the Streifenschliff, which in English we call Glashütte striping or Glashütte stripes. These are extremely fine parallel grooves engraved on the plate and bridges, executed by hand with an abrasive tool on a guided support. The direction is constant, the distance between grooves is uniform to a tenth of a millimeter. The result is a surface that does not reflect light flatly but breaks it down into alternating bands of light and dark. In Nomos movements this finishing is visible through the sapphire case back on the DUW calibers; in A. Lange & Söhne it appears on maillechort plates, whose German trade name is argentan or German silver, a copper-nickel alloy that machines well and remains dimensionally stable.

Alongside Streifenschliff, the Saxon tradition includes sunbeam finishing: radial lines that radiate from a central point, typically applied to balance wheel plates. Nomos uses it on the Swing System of the DUW 4601 caliber. The difference between the two finishings is geometric: parallel in the first case, radiating in the second.

Equally characteristic are the three-quarter plate and the two-thirds plate. Ferdinand Adolph Lange introduced the three-quarter plate in 1864: it covers almost the entire movement surface, leaving only the barrel exposed. This configuration stiffens the structure, reduces play, and simplifies reassembly. Mühle Glashütte uses it on its MU 94- calibers since 2008; Tutima offers it in the 617 caliber with hand-beveled edges and gold screwed chatons. The two-thirds variant instead leaves the balance wheel area exposed, a choice that favors oscillator visibility.

Two functional elements complete the picture. The swan-neck regulator — swan-neck spring — is a curved blade spring that locks the fine-tuning slider: its shape reduces return play when correcting the rate. The flying tourbillon is an invention from 1920 attributed to Alfred Helwig of the Glashütte School of Watchmaking: the cage is anchored only from below, so rotation is visible without the upper bridge. These solutions are not merely ornamental: they arise from precise technical needs, and later became recognizable signatures of the Saxon school.

Saxon finishing, a term that groups all these techniques, is not a formal certification. It is a set of practices passed down in the same valley, verifiable to the naked eye by those who have studied them at the workbench.
