Definition

Carbon fiber is not a single material: it's a family of composites, and anyone who's been working on watches long enough knows this from the first piece they disassemble. The starting point is always the same — carbon filaments with extremely high tensile strength and low weight — but the matrix that holds them together, the consolidation process, and the layer orientation change everything: mechanical properties, appearance, cost, and behavior under cutting tools.

The most widespread form in watchmaking is the polymer matrix composite: overlaid fiber layers impregnated with epoxy resin, then pressed in an autoclave. Panerai calls its process Carbotech and works thin strips laid one on top of the other with binder, then baked in a pressurized oven. The result is a visible and recognizable stratified pattern. Girard-Perregaux with its carbon glass alternates layers of carbon and fiberglass, creating zones of irregular structure that make each case visually different from the others.

Forged carbon is a distinct process: small composite fragments are pressed into a mold while the resin hardens. The grain is random, every piece is unrepeatable, and the technique is more demanding in terms of process control. It's not just different aesthetics — the internal structure differs from oriented lamination.

There are also more specialized variants. CTP (Carbon Thin Ply) uses ultra-thin sheets with different orientations for each layer, creating a particularly rigid and hypoallergenic multi-interlaced network. Behrens developed a diamond coating on fiber (SPSCF) to increase surface hardness without adding weight. Ulysse Nardin uses Carbonium, fiber sourced from recycled aeronautical structures. The Ceramic Matrix Composite — developed with the German Aerospace Center for IWC — replaces the polymer matrix with ceramic, achieving thermal shock insensitivity that a polymer cannot guarantee.

On the bio and recycling front, Norqain's NORTEQ uses a matrix 60% derived from castor oil, while Blancpain's NyloFoil combines regenerated carbon fiber with polyamide from recycled fishing nets. These are choices that modify the density and elasticity of the final composite, not just product communication.

A detail I often see overlooked: composite carbon fiber is generally hypoallergenic and doesn't corrode, but it's not indestructible. Scratches from point impact do exist. And working it in the workshop requires dedicated tools: abrasive fibers wear standard inserts quickly.
