Definition
The crystal is the window that separates the dial from the outside world, and its geometry conditions both the readability and the entire visual character of a watch. Three materials divide the market: synthetic sapphire, acrylic, and Seiko's Hardlex. Each has its own precise logic, and choosing the wrong material is a design error, not a budget one.
Synthetic sapphire — hardness 9 on the Mohs scale — is today the standard for any watch that takes itself seriously. It resists daily scratches but shatters with localized impact: it is rigid, not elastic. Acrylic is the opposite: it scratches with your keychain keys, but absorbs blows without breaking and polishes with a cloth and a bit of abrasive paste. On vintage diving watches from the Sixties and Seventies, I preferred it to sapphire for precisely this reason. Seiko's Hardlex sits in the middle: harder than acrylic, less so than pure aluminum oxide, and cheaper to produce.
Geometry is where things get interesting. A flat crystal is neutral: it adds nothing and takes nothing away. A domed crystal — convex toward the outside — changes the perception of the case, makes it seem more generous, and creates a slight optical distortion at the edges that I find fascinating on vintage sports watches. Double-domed, convex both inside and out, accompanies curved dials and gives an optical depth that a flat crystal cannot imitate. TAG Heuer's Glassbox takes this concept to the extreme: the crystal merges with the case without a conventional bezel, recalling the proportions of the original Carrera from the Sixties. Box sapphire crystals — explicitly evoke the domed profiles of acrylic from the last century, but with sapphire's hardness.
Anti-reflective (AR) coating is almost mandatory today, and the difference between single-side coating and multi-layer coating on both sides is immediately visible under raking light. Some makers apply up to ten layers. The inner side is what matters most for readability; the outer side protects the coating from wear. When the coating deteriorates — and it does, especially with aggressive solvents — the crystal must be replaced, it cannot be restored.
Special cases I have encountered: indices applied to the underside of the crystal to create depth without added thickness; laser-cut grooves on the back to hold luminescent materials separate from the dial; and the Ressence system, where the pebble-profile crystal is glued and baked in an oven because there is no bezel to hold it. Different techniques, but all answer the same question: how do I look inside without something disturbing my view.
Frequently asked questions
Is acrylic really inferior to sapphire?
It depends on the use. Acrylic scratches more easily, but it won't shatter from a sharp blow and can be polished. On vintage dive watches, it was a deliberate choice, not a compromise. Sapphire is harder but fragile to localized impacts.
Can the anti-reflective coating be restored if it deteriorates?
No. The AR coating cannot be recovered through cleaning or polishing. If it has deteriorated — often from contact with solvents or harsh detergents — the only solution is to replace the crystal.
