Clasp

Definition
The clasp is the mechanical device that fastens the bracelet or strap to the wrist: it's where most of the pulling stress concentrates during use, and it's often the first component to fail if poorly designed. There are two basic families, with everything else stemming from them: the pin buckle and the folding clasp.
The pin buckle, also called pin buckle, is the most ancient system. A pin passed through leather long before wristwatches were even a concept. It works, it lasts, and it can be repaired on the bench with a needle and a small hammer. The downside is that the strap must pass through the lug with every wearing: it wears the material within months at the contact point.
The folding clasp, called déployante or folding clasp, opens laterally without removing the strap from the wrist. It protects the material from mechanical wear and reduces the risk of losing the watch in case of accidental opening. The butterfly or double déployante variant opens on both sides: the wrist enters and exits like from a pedal stirrup. The friction version, as certain Cartier models mount it, has no buttons: it opens by pulling the flaps and closes by pressing them, with a simple system but requiring very precise spring calibration to avoid becoming too soft over time.
Within these two families, microadjustment systems are integrated, now very widespread. The logic is always the same: to allow small length variations without removing entire links or punching holes in the strap. Manufacturers call them differently — T-Fit in Tudor, Easylink in Rolex, NodeX in Nodus, Easy-fit in Vacheron Constantin — but the mechanical principle oscillates between the snap tooth, the adjustment screw, and the push-button module. The snap tooth system is the fastest; the screw one is the most precise but requires a tool. The push-button systems like those from Tudor or Nodus adjust the total length within a six-to-ten millimeter window without disassembling anything.
The leaf spring is an internal construction detail that keeps the déployante closed while reducing thickness compared to a helical spring. It's found in high-end clasps where every tenth of a millimeter matters.
Omega's Naiad lock is a different system: it concerns not the bracelet but the threaded case back, and it ensures that the engraving on the sapphire crystal locks into the correct position once closed. I mention it here because in notes it's often confused with bracelet clasps.
From the bench: the most robust clasp isn't necessarily the most complex. I've seen four-thousand-euro butterfly déployantes that lost their click after six months, and nickel-plated brass pin buckles that held up for twenty years. Quality lies in the manufacturing tolerance of the contact surfaces and the hardness of the steel used for the springs.
