In watchmaking, the chime is not simply an alert sound: it's a system of multiple hammers striking distinct gongs in melodic sequence, producing recognizable phrasing rather than simple single strikes. The difference from a classical minute repeater lies precisely in the number of voices: where traditional repeaters use two hammers and two gongs, the chime uses at least four, opening the way to harmonic intervals and structured melodies.

The most widespread sequence is Westminster, reproducing the four quarters of the Westminster bells in London. The mechanism divides time into hours, quarters and minutes through distinct racks: the Vacheron Constantin with five gongs and four racks is an extreme example, capable of operating in both Grande Sonnerie — where the hour is repeated at every quarter — and Petite Sonnerie, where the quarters sound without repeating the hour. The Grande/Petite distinction directly affects power reserve: Grande Sonnerie is mechanically far more demanding.

The chime can be integrated into a minute repeater, as in the Armin Strom Minute Repeater Resonance 12:59, or paired with a chronograph, as in the Omega Speedmaster Chrono Chime, where the chronograph cams read elapsed time and translate it into sound sequences on gold gongs. In that caliber there are three specific cams — for the fifteen minutes, tens of seconds and units of seconds — that govern the hammers independently from the timekeeping function.

Acoustic quality depends on the material and shape of the gongs, the mass and strike point of the hammers, and the absence of unwanted silences between strikes. Jaeger-LeCoultre developed the so-called trébuchet hammers and a system for eliminating silent intervals specifically to make the chime more fluid; crystal gongs, used by some manufacturers, further modify the timbre. From the bench I learned that sound purity is felt especially with a steady wrist, in silence: a poorly damped gong resonates against the case and muddies everything.

The hour-strike au passage — that sounds automatically at every hour without manual activation, as in the MeisterSinger Bell Hora — is the simplest form of integrated chime. Even more accessible solutions, like the Christopher Ward C1 Bel Canto with its single visible gong on the dial, belong conceptually to the same family: the distinctive element remains sound as information, not merely as effect.
