Definition
Bioceramics is not technical ceramics in the classical sense of the term: it is a proprietary composite developed by Swatch that blends ceramic powder, raw materials of biological origin, and pigments, processed internally in the Swiss facilities of the group. The result is a material that is neither plastic nor pure ceramics, with characteristics of its own that distinguish it from both.
From a constructive standpoint, bioceramics offers two advantages that stainless steel cannot provide at that price point: almost total chromatic freedom and the capacity to reproduce complex geometries—such as the step dial and asymmetrical case of the Speedmaster Professional—without the limitations of stamping and metal machining. Steel requires milling, polishing, and satin finishing: expensive operations. Bioceramics is injected into a mold and maintains detail with precision, with a weight substantially lower than steel.
The limitation, which should not be hidden, is the wrist perception: those coming from steel or titanium feel the difference in mass and tactile warmth immediately. It is not a construction defect; it is the nature of the material. Those who know this beforehand do not complain about it.
In the context of the MoonSwatch—the collaboration launched in 2022 between Omega and Swatch—bioceramics allowed the Speedmaster silhouette to be brought to 260 euros with entirely Swiss production. It is a technical choice consistent with the objective, not a hidden compromise.
Among the variants of the line, it is worth noting a less discussed detail: some models of the 2024 Mission on Earth series adopt what are called radial dials, subdials with radial numbering inspired by the typeface of the Speedmaster Project Alaska II and III developed for NASA. A precise historical reference, not a decorative one. Equally technical is the distinction between moonphase and earthphase found in the Mission to Earthphase: the first shows the Moon as seen from Earth, the second the opposite—the Earth as seen from the Moon. When a full moon occurs on Earth, from the Moon one would observe a new Earth.
I do not know the exact composition formula that Swatch has never made public in percentage details. Anyone who tells you the precise ratio between ceramics and organic component is probably speculating.

Is bioceramic more fragile than traditional technical ceramic?
There are no certified comparative public data. Bioceramic is lighter than zirconium oxide ceramic used in fine watchmaking and less rigid. When subjected to impacts, it responds differently from steel: it doesn't scratch easily but can chip under violent impacts, like almost any ceramic.
What is the difference between moonphase and earthphase on the MoonSwatch?
The moonphase shows the lunar phase as seen from Earth. The earthphase, introduced by Swatch in the Mission to Earthphase, inverts the point of observation: it represents Earth as seen from the Moon. When there is a full moon on Earth, from the Moon one would observe a new Earth.
